MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

I am Emily S. Lee. As the chair of the department of philosophy at California State University at Fullerton, it is my distinct pleasure to congratulate you as graduates of the philosophy department from Cal State Fullerton. I want to thank all the people involved in your accomplishments. Philosophy is the oldest discipline of study, and philosophy remains the core of knowledge because philosophy focuses on locating underlying assumptions and overlaying abstractions. This ability to detect the unsaid, grasp the holistic picture and pinpoint the relevance can only be helpful during times of obfuscatedfacts, confusion, and contestation over the direction of our country. During times of developing understandings of how to live justly with others, changing understandings of proprietary knowledge, and multiple definitions of success and happiness, our philosophy graduates have the skills to develop a proud future. After all, one of philosophy’s most persistent question is what constitutes a good life; graduates of the philosophy department, I am confident in your abilities to carve out a good life.
