Program Courses
HUM350: Norwegian Life & Culture (3 units; GE C.3)
An introduction to Norwegian history, society and culture. An overview of Scandinavia from the region’s Viking past to its present as one of the world’s most progressive, egalitarian, and prosperous societies. Students will gain the tools necessary to understand and critically evaluate modern day Norway from a multidisciplinary perspective. Special attention will be paid to matters of particular importance to Norwegians today, including (1) social equality and cohesion, (2) childhood, family life, and “work-life balance”, (3) personal freedom and collective action, and (4) nature and the environment. Current debates about integration, immigration, multiculturalism and national identity will also be highlighted during numerous field excursions in and around Oslo and during travel to Bergen (‘gateway to the fjords’) as part of a multi-day comparative field visit.
ANTH350: Culture & Education (3 units; GE D.1)
This course will explore the transmission of values, implicit cultural assumptions and the patterning of education in cross-cultural perspective. This course will examine how culture impacts education, and how education in turn impacts culture, in Norway, the USA, and in other parts of the industrialized/developed world. We will also examine the relationships between culture and education in non-industrialized/developing societies, for comparison.
