VIET 101 – Fundamental Vietnamese–A (3 uNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.2
Develop listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing, and cultural awareness to communicate on a basic level, with a focus on oral expression. Introduction to Vietnamese customs, culture, and civilization.

VIET 102 – Fundamental Vietnamese–B (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.2
Prerequisite: VIET 101 or equivalent (i.e. VIET 101 is not required if student's Vietnamese competency is equivalent to the language level of this class)
Continued development of listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing, and cultural awareness to communicate on a basic level. Further study of Vietnamese customs, culture, and civilization.

VIET 201 – Vietnamese for Vietnamese Speakers–A (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.2
Prerequisite: Students must be able to sustain conversation
Intermediate course to develop communication through reading and writing and to improve oral communication. Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 202 – Vietnamese for Vietnamese Speakers–B (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.2
Prerequisite: Advanced speaking competency
Develop reading/writing skills. A broad range of topics are studied and students write articles and letters, as well as essays and reports on cross-cultural topics. Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 203 – Intermediate Vietnamese–A (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.2
Prerequisite: VIET 102 or equivalent
Listening and reading comprehension and oral and writing competence in Vietnamese involving intermediate level language based on cultural materials with further exploration of Vietnamese culture. Conducted primarily in Vietnamese.

VIET 204 – Intermediate Vietnamese–B (3 UNITS)

Prerequisite: VIET 203 or equivalent level
Continued development of students' communicative competency in Vietnamese with a focus on listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture at the intermediate level. Emphasis on building vocabulary and developing grammatical accuracy. Conducted primarily in Vietnamese.

VIET 214 – Vietnamese Cultural Conversation and Composition (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.2
Prerequisite: VIET 204 or equivalent
This course is designed to help students further develop Vietnamese language competency, with a focus on discussions and essays about various topics related to Vietnamese culture. Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 300 – Vietnamese for the Health Professions (3 UNITS)

Prerequisite: VIET 214 or equivalent Vietnamese communicative competence
This course provides students in the health professions with skills necessary to effectively communicate in Vietnamese, using terminology and culturally appropriate expressions specific to their field. Conducted primarily in Vietnamese.

VIET 305 – Advanced Vietnamese–A (3 UNITS)

Prerequisite: VIET 204 or equivalent
Continued development of Vietnamese communicative competency in Vietnamese with a focus on listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture at the advanced level. Building vocabulary and strengthening grammatical accuracy. Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 310 – Vietnamese for Business (3 UNITS)

Prerequisite: VIET 204 or equivalent
A course designed to improve students' oral and written communication skills in Vietnamese in business settings as well as foster their understanding of the cultural background of the Vietnamese business environment. Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 311 – Vietnamese for International Business (3 UNITS)

Prerequisite: VIET 204 or equivalent
A course designed to develop students' Vietnamese competency needed for both oral and written communication in business settings, focusing on international business issues such as import, export, foreign investment, and marketing, as well as international cooperation and competition. Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 315 – Vietnamese Civilization (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.3
Prerequisite: VIET 214 or equivalent
A course designed to provide a chronological review of Vietnamese civilization from its earliest history to the 16th century, focusing on ideologies, institutions, literature, and arts. Conducted primarily in Vietnamese.

VIET 325 – Vietnamese Culture (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.3
Prerequisite: VIET 204 or equivalent level
Provides students with opportunities to develop understanding of Vietnamese culture from the 17th century to the present day. The focus is onideologies, institutions, literature, and arts. Conducted primarily in Vietnamese. 

HUM 350T – Vietnamese Life and Culture (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.3 Explorations in the Humanities and Z Cultural Diversity
This interdisciplinary course explores Vietnamese culture and history, taking a social, historical, and cultural approach to contemporary Vietnamese society and examining traditions and institutions to help students understand modern Vietnamese life. Conducted in English.

VIET 375 – Introduction to Vietnamese Literature (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.3
Prerequisites: VIET 305, VIET 315, or VIET 325, and completion of GE Area C.2
This course is designed to introduce Vietnamese literature throughout its history, focusing on prose and poetry. It develops students' understanding of Vietnamese literature and culture, and strengthens their abilities to analyze literary texts, using various literary theories. Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 385 – Advanced Vietnamese Cultural Communication (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.3. Explorations in the Humanities and Z Cultural Diversity
Prerequisites: VIET 214 or equivalent Vietnamese communicative competency, and completion of GE Area C.2
Exploration of topics and themes to broaden and deepen Vietnamese cultural awareness from a humanistic perspective, and development of critical, analytical and creative oral and writing competencies.
Conducted in Vietnamese.

VIET 390 – Vietnamese Culture through Cinema and Literature (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.3
Prerequisites: VIET 214 or equivalent Vietnamese communicative competency, and completion of GE Area C.2
Study of the development of modern Vietnamese culture and society, as well as multicultural analysis of global issues through various media, including subtitled films and literature (in translation).
Conducted primarily in English.

VIET 395 – Vietnamese Literature and Arts (3 UNITS)

Meets GE requirements C.3
Prerequisite: VIET 214 or equivalent Vietnamese communicative competency, and completion of GE Area C.2
Interdisciplinary exploration of Vietnamese literature and arts through a wide variety of representations. Contextualized analysis of movements and genres within historical processes. Conducted primarily in English.

VIET 450 – Vietnamese Senior Seminar (3 UNITS)

Prerequisites: VIET 214, or VIET 305, or equivalent Vietnamese communicative competency
Research and discussion of a cultural, literary or linguistic theme. Subject varies and is announced in the class schedule. May be repeated for credit with a different topic. Conducted primarily in Vietnamese.

VIET 466 – Introduction to Vietnamese Linguistics (3 UNITS)

Prerequisite: VIET 305 or equivalent; or permission of instructor
General introduction to the Vietnamese language as a subject of linguistic investigation. Topics include the structure (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics) and the history of the Vietnamese language, the characteristics of Vietnamese dialects, and the writing system.

VIET 468 – Vietnamese English Bilingualism and Language Contact (3 UNITS)

Prerequisite: VIET 214, or VIET 305, or equivalent Vietnamese communicative competency
Topics related to Vietnamese-English bilingualism and language contact. Linguistic situation of Vietnamese and of the Vietnamese populations in Vietnam and the USA within psycholinguistic, grammatical, and sociolinguistic theoretical frames. Conducted primarily in Vietnamese.
