Cal State DC Is Expanding

You heard that right. Cal State DC is no longer just for the spring and summer.

This fall, the program welcomes its first-ever fall cohort, giving students another opportunity to spend a semester in Washington, D.C. These semesters allow our students to gain hands-on experience and see firsthand what a career in our nation’s capital can look like.

Open to students from all majors and across the CSU, Cal State DC combines academic courses with internships at government agencies, nonprofits, think tanks, cultural institutions, and more. Past students have landed internships everywhere from Capitol Hill and the Smithsonian to NASA and the American Red Cross.

“We are excited about the expansion of this high-visibility, high-impact program, which honors the CSU’s commitment to preparing diverse students for careers and civic leadership at the highest levels,” said Cal State DC Scholars Director Kathryn Buechel. “Students placed in internships on Capitol Hill, non-profit, public, and private sector internships represent a direct way CSUF serves students for tomorrow’s workforce.”

A New Way to Study Sustainability

Interested in sustainability? There’s a minor for that now.

The Department of Geography and the Environment is introducing a new Sustainability minor. This minor offers students the opportunity to explore something new while showcasing how we can support ecological resilience now and in the future.

The 12-unit minor includes courses across four areas: environmental science; politics and economics of sustainability; social and cultural perspectives on sustainability; and an applied capstone experience.

What makes this minor an even better option for our students is that many of the courses eligible for the minor fall within GE and elective categories. This gives students a good way to make their GE and elective courses work double duty - work towards their degree and give them more knowledge in a growing field with a minor.

Students must earn a “C” (2.0) or better in all courses counted toward the minor. Units used for the minor must be applied exclusively to the minor and may not be used to satisfy other program requirements, except for general education.

Lowkey Confused? Is Back for Season 3

Have a question you’re quietly Googling? There’s a good chance we do too.

Lowkey Confused? HSS Explains! is back for its third season, with HSS faculty experts and Dean Jessica Stern taking on some of the topics shaping the world around us.

This season, we’re talking data centers, political aesthetics, race, online mobbing attacks, body manipulation, and more. All with the goal of taking the questions we’re curious (and maybe a little confused) about and asking our faculty experts to help us make sense of them.

And good news for Apple users: we just expanded to Apple Podcasts. You can now catch full episodes on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.

Check out our new Lowkey Confused website, where you can find all our latest episodes and any news related to our series!
