TESOL Undergraduate Programs

  • Undergraduate TESOL Certificate

  • Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP) for the World Languages: ELD Credential

Overview

The CSUF TESOL Program offers two undergraduate programs. The Undergraduate TESOL Certificate PDF File is primarily intended for students from any major who are interested in teaching English as a second or additional language, with a focus on academic English language development of school-aged children and youth in the U.S. and abroad. Students from all majors at CSU Fullerton who need training in teaching English to speakers of other languages may add the Certificate to their current studies.

All of the Certificate courses except TESL 450 count towards the requirements for the  Subject Matter Preparation Program (SMPP) for the World Language: English Language Development (ELD) Credential. The SMPP courses prepare students with the subject matter requirements for the new World Languages: ELD Credential for secondary teachers in California. All future California junior high or high school teachers may teach English language learners in departmentalized ELD classrooms with this subject matter background if they pass the CSET exam and complete a credential program. Please see the official CSET site for more information about the World Language: ELD CSET examination and the College of Education for information about applying to the secondary credential program at CSUF. (Note: Following final approval of the SMPP by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, completing the SMPP through coursework will excuse teacher candidates from having to pass the ELD CSET Exam, and will be the preferred method for satisfying subject matter preparation requirements for the credential.)
