World Language: ELD Subject Matter Preparation Program for the Secondary Credential
First World Language: ELD Subject Matter Preparation Program in California
In December 2015, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) approved the World Language: English Language Development (ELD) subject matter preparation program (SMPP) offered by the TESOL Program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at California State University, Fullerton. This is the first World Language: ELD single subject matter preparation program approved by the CCTC in the state.
Content of Program
The World Language: ELD Program at California State University, Fullerton prepares prospective secondary teachers of English Language Development with a thorough knowledge of English as essential to teaching second language learners in California schools. The program includes an array of courses providing background on English Learners in California and the United States and instruction in Applied Linguistics, culture, assessment, literacy, English Language Development, and principles of receptive and productive language instruction and assessment. The program design has been guided by the CTC Standards, the California State Board of Education ELA/ELD Framework, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Standards (formerly NCATE), and the national standards for P-12 teacher preparation as developed by the TESOL Association.
For Foreign Language Majors
Students who are majoring in Spanish, French, and Japanese at CSU Fullerton may follow the attached “Road Maps” to complete both subject matter preparation for secondary Spanish, French, and Japanese instructors as well as the subject matter preparation for ELD instructors while completing their bachelor’s degrees at CSUF. In addition, this coursework will also prepare them with all prerequisites for the secondary credential program offered by the Department of Secondary Education http://ed.fullerton.edu/seced/ .
For Other Majors
Students who are majoring in all other majors at CSU Fullerton should meet with an advisor in the Center for Careers in Teaching http://ed.fullerton.edu/cct/ and an advisor in the TESOL Program http://hss.fullerton.edu/mll/academics/tesol/ to discuss a study plan that will allow the student to complete the requirements for the bachelor’s degree and the ELD SSMP as efficiently as possible.
Undergraduate TESOL Certificate
The courses taken for the World Language: ELD SMPP may double-count for the 18-unit Undergraduate TESOL Certificate at CSUF http://hss.fullerton.edu/mll/academics/tesol/tesol_undergrad_cert_requirements.aspx that prepares instructors to teach English in the U.S. or abroad in a variety of settings.
