Welcome to ASAM!

About Us

For over 25 years, Asian American Studies (ASAM) has proudly served our diverse student body at CSUF. In Fall 2018, ASAM moved from program status to departmental status. ASAM is committed to student success, scholarly and creative activities, civic engagement, collegial governance, integrity, service to the region, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our eight tenured/tenure track faculty identify as teacher-scholars who balance teaching effectiveness, research productivity, service provision, community engagement, and program administration through collaboration, critical reflection, and planning.

Since 2014, ASAM students have actively contributed to academic conferences in the field of Asian American Studies. Guided by Dr. Eliza Noh, Dr. Tu-Uyen Nguyen, and Dr. Jennifer A. Yee, they have presented their research at the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS) Annual Conference, the leading professional gathering for Asian American Studies scholars.

2023 Experience Day

The department works closely with the Asian Pacific American Resource Center (APARC) to provide students with opportunities to volunteer with the center, including events such as Titan Night Market, APISSA Heritage Month, APISSA Recognition Celebration, and many more.

What is Asian American Studies?

Asian American Studies is an interdisciplinary field, drawing from and contributing to the humanities, social sciences, and the arts. Asian American Studies also draws upon and advances theoretical perspectives and methodologies utilized in ethnic, feminist, and cultural studies. Scholars in Asian American Studies not only tell the dreams, struggles, and accomplishments of Asian Pacific Islander South Asian Americans, they also examine the social construction of knowledge and the socio-economic, political, artistic, and cultural roles of Asian Pacific Islander South Asian Americans in the multicultural society of the United States. Topics include, but are not limited to, studies of immigration, imperialism and war, diaspora, law and legislation, community formation and civil rights, and cultural production.

Asian American studies introduces and expands on the Asian American experience for all students. The department offers the opportunity for students to explore and examine the histories and experiences, identities, social and community formations, politics and contemporary concerns of people living in the U.S. and other parts of the Americas of Asian descent.

Land Acknowledgement

We collectively acknowledge that Cal State Fullerton is located on traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of Indigenous people. Before this land was colonized it was cared for and called home by the Tongva and Acjachemen Peoples. We recognize that this land holds great historical, spiritual, and personal significance for its original inhabitants. To ensure that we are truly catalyzing change rooted in this social justice principle, Cal State Fullerton recognizes and continually support and advocate for the sovereignty of the Native nations in this territory and beyond. By offering this land acknowledgment, we affirm tribal sovereignty and our commitment to the tribes that historically called this land home.
