Application and Eligibility

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) is a two-year program for students majoring in the humanities or humanistic social sciences. Exceptional one-year transfer students will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This fellowship program is for current CSUF sophomores and junior transfer students who are committed to exploring graduate education in a humanities or humanistic social science field and a career pathway towards becoming a college or university professor.

MMUF Award Details

  • Two-year fellows (sophomore applicants): $4000 stipend for each of the two academic years, $4500 stipend for each of two summer programs, faculty mentoring, academic programming, no-cost GRE preparation, financial support for expenses related to research and graduate applications, and up to $10,000 for undergraduate loan repayment with successful and minimum enrollment in a Ph.D. program.
  • One-year fellows (junior transfer student applicants): $4000 stipend for one academic years, $4500 stipend for one summer, faculty mentoring, academic programming, no-cost GRE preparation, financial support for expenses related to research and graduate applications, and up to $10,000 for undergraduate loan repayment with successful and minimum enrollment in a Ph.D. program.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Sophomore or junior standing at the time of application (expected graduation date of Spring 2028; graduation dates of Spring 2027 will be considered for exceptional transfer students)
  • Academic promise for original humanities research with a 3.3 minimum GPA in major
  • Commitment to pursuing graduate education, especially a Ph.D., in an eligible discipline of the humanities or humanistic social sciences
  • Potential for serving as a future mentor and teacher for humanities students
  • Availability for, and commitment to, full and enthusiastic participation in all aspects of the MMUF program, including attendance at conferences, research, and regular meetings
  • Status as a US citizen, permanent resident, as well as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or undocumented status
