WMST 320: Gendered Technoculture: Sex, Lies, Videotape & Cyberspace

Course Description

What happens in the matrix of gender, technology, representation, and culture? This class will explore the theoretical issues raised within this matrix. We will also make sense of the theories through practical experiences with technologies like computers and cameras.

Learning Goals and Outcomes

  • Developing critical analysis skills
  • Developing internet and computer skills
  • Understanding the issues raised by the convergence of gender, race, and technology
  • Analyzing multiple technologies within gendered cultural contexts
  • Integrating critical thinking and writing skills through a gendered lens

Required Books

HTML for Dummies, Quick Reference,
Selected Readings on Reserve and on-line accessed through Blackboard

Course Requirements

  • 45 points Individual Webblog
  • 45 points Individual Web site
  • 10 points Participation

Webblog

You will maintain a daily webblog in which you discuss the topics, themes, and issues that are covered in class and in the readings. Go to http://www.xanga.com to log in and create your blog. You need to set up links to everyone else's webblog site, and are encouraged to visit those blogs and provide feedback and support to your classmates as they answer the why question for each of their opinions. As a class, you have developed the following criteria for assessment:
  • critical reasoning: answer the question why for each statement
  • meet the credibility index (see below)
    • outside authority
    • appropriate use of personal experience as an authority
    • Appropriate use of conventions of written & spoken English
    • facts/stats/history/data
    • Focus on Gender as the category of analysis
DUE: Prior to the beginning of the next class

Individual Web Site

Create a website on the topic you are most interested from those that we will cover in each of the four sections. Your audience are the members of our community and your job is to inform them about your particular topic. Sites should be ready for uploading two days prior to the end of the semester (January 27). Review all of the week's websites the day before our discussion (day 3 of each week). Pages must be written using HTML only, not web development software. Web projects will be graded based on the following criteria: visual presentation, gender analysis, application of html skills, content, and number of pages (minimum 5).

Participation

Participation means contributing to the discussions in class, coming to class prepared (ready and thinking), and talking. Attendance is required. This is a discussion-based course, and you will need to be here to keep up with the material. Your contributions to the class will also be critical to our success. Missing more than 3 classes means you aren't fully contributing, and will result in a loss of a full letter grade. Use the final sentences of your blog to report on your classroom participation.

Attendance Policy

Because part of your grade is based on participation, you must attend class. More than two absences will result in a loss of one letter grade for the class. More than three tardies will become one absence.

Classroom Expectations

The following list covers expectations for in-class behavior:
  • Turn off all cell phones and beepers
  • Arrive on time
  • Do not leave during class except for emergencies
  • Be prepared with all readings
  • Notify professor if you will be absent
  • All work must be your own. Plagarism will result in a failing grade on the assignment.
