Required courses
HUM 350T: Life and Culture in South Africa [GE C.3. & Z]
This course introduces students to the social, historical and cultural highlights of contemporary South Africa, as well as principles and methods useful for analyzing cultures and their own interactions with them.
AMST 300: Intro to American Popular Culture: The U.S. and South Africa
[GE D.5]
This course situates the study of American popular culture in a global context, with a particular focus on the transnational flow of people, products, ideas, and culture between the U.S. and South Africa. South Africa offers a compelling case study of globalization; as the scholar James Campbell writes, "In few if any societies in the world did the process of Americanization begin so early; in few if any has it been so thoroughgoing, so replete with irony, or of such central historical significance." Using an interdisciplinary approach that integrates literature, music, film, journalism, and history, this course will examine the impact of globalization on race relations, class formation, consumer culture, gender roles, and youth culture in South Africa. At the same time, we will study the reverse process, examining the ways in which South African culture and politics have had an influence on the American popular imagination.
