Summer 2013 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Port Elizabeth is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is set on the shores of the Indian Ocean overlooking Algoa Bay. Port Elizabeth has beautiful sandy beaches, stretching about 16km (10 miles), and an atmosphere of relaxed, year-round fun. The mild winter temperatures, the breathtaking seashore and the warm water are an irresistible combination for people wanting to sail, scuba dive in the colorful coral reefs, engage in snorkeling, and kite-surf. The city has a population of over 1 million and is one of the major seaports in South Africa. Port Elizabeth was founded in 1820 to house British settlers. The city is considered a sister city to Jacksonville, Florida. Students will be hosted by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), which opened in January 2005, and is the result of a merger of Port Elizabeth’s Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University. This union was the result of the government’s countrywide restructuring of higher education.
