HUM 350T: Irish Life and Culture [GE C.3. & Z]
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the introduction of Ireland and other contemporary European cultures and civilizations. Students will be introduced to social, historical and cultural highlights of contemporary Europe, to principles and methods useful for analyzing cultures and their own interactions with them. This course includes lectures by guest faculty and related field trips.

ENGL 462: Modern Irish Literature*
This course will examine Irish Literature written from the late 1890s to the 1950s. Beginning with Oscar Wilde and ending with Samuel Beckett, we will explore how Irish authors respond to major cultural upheavals during the time period, including both World Wars and Ireland’s struggle for independence. Central to this class will be the reading of James Joyce’s Ulysses, which we will read as we walk in the footsteps of its main characters.

Dr. Erin Hollis

Erin HollisDr. Erin Hollis is an assistant professor in the Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics. She specializes in 20th century literature, and most especially on Irish literature and the work of James Joyce. She also teaches a number of classes that explore popular culture, including courses on Harry Potter and graphic novels. She is currently working on a book that explores how literature can encourage its readers to be more decent and kind to one another.

Registration

After your application is approved, we will register you in your selected classes. After you are registered, you will be notified to go online and pay tuition for your Summer units. All adds, drops or schedule changes must be completed prior to leaving for this trip.

Summer 2013 tuition is separate from the program fees and will be paid through Student Financial Services after enrollment is complete.

Ireland Study Abroad Student Statement

Ireland study abroad students are expected to attend all of their registered classes, unless there is a medical reason which prevents them from doing so, and to adhere to all behavioral norms established on their respective campuses.
