ENGL 306: Writing through Paris [GE C.3]

"If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young person, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”
--Ernest Hemingway

"Writing through Paris" invites students to see Paris like the hundreds of writers, such as Hemingway, who have been inspired by its moveable feast. You will study the art of travel writing, and read and write (in English) about traveling and living in this beautiful and complex city. With our class, you will visit the museums, parks, cafés, neighborhoods, and bookstores that appear in the essays we read, and then you will take a turn at writing about what you see and hear and experience in these same places. As a final project, you will select a part of Paris that you find most interesting, mysterious, amusing, or confusing and write an extended essay that discloses something about you, about the place you have chosen and about the power of travel to change our worldview.*
