About the program

South Africa is a country rich in history and culture set against a backdrop containing extraordinary wildlife and natural landscapes.  Known today as the rainbow nation, its transition from a system of racial segregation known as apartheid to a non-racial society based on equity serves as a case study for scholars interested in the promise of social policies to realize racial and economic justice.  At the same time, global fascination with South Africa’s wildlife threatens to exacerbate pre-apartheid environmental racism and human-wildlife conflict. The 2023 H&SS Study Abroad Program in South Africa examines social justice in the rainbow nation post-apartheid, introducing students to the triumphs and challenges of overcoming a legacy of racism and economic inequality.
