Brief biography: I did my education at the University of Missouri and completed my bachelor's (1973) and master's degree (1975) in Sociology. I then worked for two years with the University of Missouri Extension Service as an Area Youth Specialist.

In 1977 I was accepted in the doctoral program at Oklahoma State University. I completed my Ph.D (1981) and then took a position at OSU. In 2001, I received the OSU Regent's Distinguished Teaching Award.  During this time I served as a Professor and Director of the Gerontology Institute. After spending over 20 years at OSU, my family moved to California.

In 2002 I accepted a position in the Sociology Department at CSUF and am currently serving as the Coordinator of Gerontology Academic Program and Vice Chair for the Sociology Department. I am also the faculty advisor for Sigma Phi Omega (gerontology honor society) and have served as the faculty advisor of Alpha Kappa Delta (sociology honor society). From 2003-2004 I served as President of the National Sigma Phi Omega Board of Directors.  In 2007 I received the CSUF Outstanding Service and Contribution to Student Success Award
