Brief
biography: Dr. Jorge Fontdevila received his Ph.D. in Sociology at Columbia University in 2002. His dissertation research conducted among heroin-involved heterosexual men in Harlem argues that sexual HIV risk behavior results from tensions between rationality and masculinity in the context of gender asymmetries and drug-using networks. His current ethnographic research explores sexual health and HIV risk-taking among gay and bisexual Mexican immigrants in San Diego. Dr. Fontdevila's research interests include sexualities, HIV/AIDS, health, migration, and sociological theory. He teaches Social Interaction, Sociology of Sexualities, and a forthcoming graduate seminar on the Sociology of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Fontdevila's goals are to stimulate critical thinking among his students and teach them the skills to apply sociological concepts and theories to their daily lives.
