What Prerequisites Should I Be Aware Of?

Philosophy 405 requires that either Phil 105, Critical Thinking, Phil 106, Logic, or Phil 368, First Course in Symbolic Logic, be taken as a prerequisite. Although this requirement can be waived, especially for transfer students, you should consider taking one of these three classes. All three courses meet the GE Critical Thinking requirement and all three also double-count toward the major. (Only courses in this GE area can be double-counted.) If you have already fulfilled your GE Critical Thinking requirement, consider taking the upper division logic course, Phil 368. This is an excellent course and is central to the kind of careful reasoning expected of you as a philosophy major.

Philosophy 493 requires as a prerequisite two courses in Ethics and Social/Political Philosophy from areas (3.a) or (3.b) of the Concentration course requirements.

When Should I take Phil 405 and Phil 493?

Applications to graduate programs at professional schools typically begin sometime in the late Fall prior to enrolling following Fall. Both Phil 405 and Phil 493 are designed to aid the success of your application. Typically, you should these courses no later than the Fall Semester of your senior year if you plan to enroll in a graduate professional program the following Fall. Consider taking both courses the Summer before your senior year.

Note that it typically takes one or two months to set-up an internship. You need to start the process the semester prior to enrolling in the course. If you wait until the beginning of Fall semester to begin looking for an internship, it may well be too late.
