Internship Possibilities
You may complete the Senior Internship in
the setting of your choice. You are advised
to do the internship in the career field you are
considering and/or to do the internship in an
'social service' organization such as a NPO, PAC,
or government social service agency. Your
internship site must be approved. Some sites have
long-standing relationships with CSU Fullerton
and are already approved. There are typically
over 400 internships available through the Center
for Internships and Cooperative Education,
although most would not be appropriate for
students in the Concentration. Still, your search
for an internship should begin in this office.
Some approved sites of interest to students in
the Concentration include:
- The Orange County Probation Department
- The Orange County Public Defenders Office
- Orange County Human Relations
- Los Angeles County District Attorney's
Office (Victim-Witness Assistance
Program)
You might also want to consider doing an
internship in either Sacramento or Washington
D.C. Some of these internships are quite
competitive, particularly if you are seeking an
internship in a representatives office. On the
other hand, there are a number of PACs and NPOs
with offices in these capitals who are regularly
involved in shaping legislation and the
day-to-day activities to regulatory offices and
commissions. This would take some advanced
planning, but it is certain to offer many
rewarding future opportunities.
If you would like to organize an internship
with an employer or agency that is not
pre-approved, that organization will be required
to fill out a few forms and so forth. This is
certainly a possibility and you are encouraged
to seek out internships on your own. (It is
not complicated, but some employers have been
known to balk at the official paperwork.) Please
speak to the Professional Careers Advisor early
if you are considering an internship at a site
that has not been pre-approved.
You may do the internship in any semester, but
you are encouraged to do it no later than the
Fall semester of your Senior Year. You may wish
to consider doing the internship during the
Summer Semester in order to take advantage of the
fact that many internships are paid.
