Double Majoring in Philosophy
It is not difficult to double major in Philosophy and some other major, such as History or Political Science. the main advantage to double-majoring is that you can take courses that both satisfy the General Education requirements and meet the Philosophy Major requirements. Although some arcane stipulations apply (see the Academic Catalog), the main stipulation is that you must take 24 units of Philosophy that count only toward the Philosophy major (and that at least 12 of these be upper division units). In effect, this means that you can take 5 courses that satisfy both General Education Requirements and Philosophy Major requirements.
Note that you can only double count courses toward both the major and GE requirements if Philosophy is your second major. Note also that of the 24 units unique to the Philosophy major, none of them can count toward another major. For example, if one of your philosophy classes is accepted by another department as counting toward that major (in History or Poli Sci for example), then it cannot be one of the 24 unique units that count toward the philosophy major. Consider the following two scenarios.
- Scenario-1: You transfer to Cal State Fullerton having taken nine units of Philosophy that satisfy the GE requirements. If you want to make Philosophy your second major, you would need to take 30 more units, of which 6 units could also satisfy remaining GE requirements or requirements for other majors.
- Scenario-2: You start as a Freshman at Cal State Fullerton and take twelve units of philosophy courses to meet your GE requirements. You have already begun another major, but decide during your sophomore year that you might want to have Philosophy as a second major. One good option would be to take your remaining upper division GE requirement in Philosophy and then continue to take Philosophy courses that count toward the major. Depending on your first major, you may find it easy to double major, but even if you don't you can still graduate with a minor in philosphy. (See The Philosophy Minor ).
Check the Academic Catalog for a complete list of Philosophy courses that meet GE requirements. For help planning your courses, check the Course Rotation Guidelines and the Advising pages.
