Portuguese Program

Welcome to the Portuguese Program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at CSUF!  Did you know that there are more than 200 million native speakers of Portuguese in the world?  This makes it the fifth or sixth most-spoken first language in the world.

The Department regularly offers upper- and lower-division Portuguese courses in a fully online format.

While studying Portuguese at CSUF, students also learn about cultures in which Portuguese is spoken (particularly that of Brazil, but also of Portugal, Lusophone Africa, and even of communities in the United States), with lessons focusing on their history, arts, traditions, and values.

The study of Portuguese and associated fields such as linguistics, civilization, and literature can provide an excellent preparation for advanced study or for many careers, including but not limited to:

·         Latin American Studies

·         Environmental Studies

·         Anthropology

·         Music

·         Geography

·         Education

·         Law

·         Business

·         Travel services / Hostelry

·         Communication / Journalism

·         Film, entertainment, media

·         Interpretation / translation

·         International banking / finance

·         Government Diplomatic Corps
