The Arana Family Scholarship

Purpose: To provide scholarship support to undergraduate students at Cal State Fullerton majoring in the Spanish language program within the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures.  Special consideration given to individual(s) meeting the following criteria:

Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater
First-generation students
Spanish majors in their freshman or sophomore years
Demonstrated financial need

In addition, special consideration is also given to senior undergraduate students who are planning to pursue a Masters in Spanish at CSUF.

Amount: $750.00

Nancy Terry Baden TESOL Scholarship

Purpose: Established by Professor Emeritus Nancy T. Baden (“Terry” Baden), a longtime faculty member in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, to promote effective preparation of teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for K-12, Adult, Intensive English Program, Community College, and University settings in the U.S. and abroad.

Nancy “Terry” Baden was former chair of the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures.  Dr. Baden was a beloved professor with a deep understanding of human nature and a strong motivation for humanitarian service.  Over her more than 34 years of teaching, she lovingly instructed students in Spanish, Portuguese, and TESOL and had a broad appreciation for cultures of the world.  She was also instrumental in the planning and development of the Foreign Language Education Program (FLED), the American Language Program (ALP), the ESL Certificate Program, and the M.S. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Program on the CSU Fullerton campus. 

Eligibility: The award is open to M.S. TESOL graduate students with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher in the program.

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures Scholarship

Purpose: To provide scholarship support to undergraduate students at Cal State Fullerton enrolled in a major, minor, or certificate program within the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures. In order to qualify, applicants must have 1) declared the major, minor, or certificate as a degree objective, and 2) successfully completed at least one upper-division course in the program. Special consideration given to individual(s) meeting the following criteria:

Overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater
Demonstrated financial need

The Lydia VÉlez student of perseverance award

Purpose:  To provide scholarship support to students at Cal State Fullerton who have persevered through challenges that may have impacted their academic career.  In order to qualify, applicants must have 1) declare the major, minor, graduate major, or certificate within the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures as a degree objective, and 2) successfully completed at least one upper-division course in the program.  Special consideration given to individuals whose personal statements include the following:

A compelling statement of need
A record of overcoming challenges in any facet of life through resilience and perseverance
An explanation of how the applicant has used the challenges to improve his/her own life and how s/he can inspire others to do the same.

Amount: $500.00
