Research interests: My current research is on conceptual issues in evolutionary theory and research on the origin of life, with particular emphasis on the use of complexity theory.  I also am interested in how complexity theory can provide a productive context for a dialogue between religion and science. Current projects include completing a scientific biography of British biochemist and Nobel laureate Peter Mitchell for Oxford University Press and editing a volume for MIT Press of papers on the Baldwin Effect and the Evolutionary Emergence of Mind presented at Bennington College in 1999.  I hope to collaborate with Prof. Jim Hofmann (CSUF, Philosophy and Liberal Studies) to write some articles on problems of the argument from design and theistic evolution.

Hobbies: Reading poetry; reading historical fiction, especially medieval mysteries; collecting books on evolution, genetics, and on science/religion dialogue as well as first editions of Dickens; gardening, walking, traveling, composing music.

COURSES TAUGHT:

LBST 487 Senior Seminar in Creation and Evolution

LBST 304 Liberal Studies in the Sciences

For the Chemistry Department, I teach biochemistry (Chem 423B).  I am, as of 2001, also the Robert Woodworth Professor of Science and Natural Philosophy at Bennington College (in Vermont) during the fall semesters. In the spring I am at CSUF where I also teach Phil 333 (with Prof. Hofmann) and occasionally Phil 386.  At Bennington College I teach classes such as The Meanings of Evolution, Complexity and Postmodernism, Molecular Evolution, and Complex Systems Dynamics.
