Research interests in science in literature and science in popular culture. I am finishing a study of cosmology from the 1950s to the 1970s in which I have shown that popular and religious discussions of cosmology had an impact on subsequent technical developments in the field.  I am starting a project on the public reaction to the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the ensuing interactions between the space race and the cold war.

Resource Recommendations:

  • John Canaday, The Nuclear Muse (literary study)

  • Jessica Wang, American Science in an Age of Anxiety (history)

  • Richard Powers, The Gold Bug Variations (literature).
