Research Interests:
Where to begin?!
I’m a research fanatic – it seems to dominate everything that I
do. Whether in the library or
online, I love to don my Sherlock Holmes cap and magnifying glass, arm
myself with 5 x 8 index cards and pens, and uncover the secrets of the
topic du jour. Most of
the time, my research centers on the evolving image of the Other in
literature, particularly the Muslim as Other.
Because I follow the New Historicism school of thought in terms of
literary criticism, my research often entails tracking down tidbits from a
variety of disciplines. Writers
don’t compose in a vacuum; therefore, I examine texts in light of what
was going on in the writer’s world at the time of composition to see how
things such as historical, social, political, and religious
ideologies/trends of the day manifest themselves in his/her work.
In a nutshell, it’s safe to say that I research just about
everything, including the kitchen sink!
Hobbies:
Corny as it may sound, research, reading, and writing are my all-time favorite pursuits. A student recently recommended Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series to me, so I have been voraciously working my way through the books. I spend entirely too much time on the computer looking for new and improved resources to add to my collection of web sites and playing city-building strategy games like Caesar, Pharaoh, and Zeus, Master of Olympus. Although I don’t watch much television, I won’t miss an episode of The Practice if I can help it.
