Research
interests My research interests focus on the 19th century
in Britain, Europe and the US. I am interested in cultural, social, and
gender history. I am currently working on several research projects: the
revision of my dissertation on Bohemia in Victorian London, a shorter
piece about a restaurant connected with the Great Exhibition of 1851 in
London, and a new project focusing on socialist communities in the western
United States. I
am an avid hiker, backpacker and desert rat. My favorite places to visit
are the Mojave and Great Basin deserts and the Sierras. I also love to
cook (French, Mexican, Chinese, Indian and Italian) and bake handmade
bread. I keep two aquaria and one Tabby cat. |
COURSES
TAUGHT
Recommended reading: My favorite recent non-fiction books are Derrick Jensen's The Culture of Make Believe (2002), a critique of civilization that is well worth consideration, and Craig Childs, The Secret Knowledge of Water (1999) and Soul of Nowhere: Traversing Grace in a Rugged Land (2002), two great books about the deserts of the Southwest. I also recommend two classic works by Noam Chomsky: Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media (with E. Herman 1988) and Necessary Illusions: Thought Control in Democratic Societies (1989). My latest fiction favorites include the surf/mystery novels of Kem Nunn, Tapping the Source (1984) and The Dogs of Winter (1997). |
