REQUIRED COURSE

HUM 350T - Italian Life and Culture [GE C.3.A & Z]
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the introduction of Italy and other contemporary European cultures and civilizations. Students will be introduced to social, historical & cultural highlights of contemporary Europe, to principles and methods useful for analyzing cultures and their own interactions with them. This course includes lectures by guest faculty and related field trips.

CHOOSE ONE COURSE FROM THE FOLLOWING

HIST 377 Modern Italy and Film* [GE C.3]
Through lectures, readings, and film screenings, the course will examine the relationship between modern Italian history and the country's national cinema. Course emphasizes the World War II-era neorealism of Rossellini and Di Sica, the existential films of Fellini and Antonioni, historical meditations on the Risorgimento and Fascist periods by Visconti and Bertolucci, and contrasting views of contemporary Italy by Tornatore and Garrone.

HIST 486 American Writers and Artists in Italy *
The role of Italy (and Florence in particular) as cultural touchstone for visiting Americans. Italy inspired nineteenth century American writers and visual artists as a model of high culture, while later Americans encountered Italy as soldiers in great wars and as writers and photographers trying to understand Italy's—and America's—place in a changed world. Students may study works by Twain, James, Whistler, Wharton, Sargent, Hemingway, and others.
