WHY

The

the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the city has become
one of the world's centers for art, music, theatre
and literature. Florence also hosts some of the
world's most noted education and financial institutions.
A
small town with a bustling population, Florence
is full of historic sites ancient churches, fantastic
museums and numerous fashion galleries. Its centuries
worth of architecture and history, nestled along
the Arno River, reveal Florence's long and remarkable

Required course:
HUM 350T Italian Life & Culture
(3) [GE III.B.3 and V]
Choose one course from the following:
ART 201B Art & Civilization (3 units) [GE III.B.1]
In teaching Art 201B we will begin by looking at art from the late Middle Ages using examples from the Baptistery and Santa Croce, and continue to examine the development of Early Renaissance art with examples from the Uffizi and Santa Maria Novella. The collections of the Uffizi and the Medici tombs would provide ideal subjects for study of the High Renaissance while the Galleria Palatina and the Galleria d’ Arte Moderna in the Pitti Palace provide abundant resources for understanding the development of art since the Renaissance.
HIST/LBST 302A Historical Dimension of Liberal Studies (3)
This course traces the development of the natural sciences, the social sciences, the humanities and the arts from the ancient Greeks and Romans, through the emergence of Christianity and Islam, the rise of the Cathedrals to Humanism and the High Renaissance. Our study will include Rome and a visit to the Forum, the Pantheon, and museum collections that feature a wealth of reminders of the achievements of the Classical World. We will also visit sites associated with the origins of Christianity, medieval fortresses, and Renaissance palaces. In Florence we will visit the Baptistery, the Uffizi, and the tombs of the Medici in an exploration of the ways in which the people of Renaissance Florence attempted to bring to life the ideas and arts of the Classical Age.
