Welcome to Summer 2012 in Budapest, Hungary

Why Study in Hungary?

dublin 01

Often overlooked by tourists, Budapest is an enchanting city rich in history and full of life.  The home of Roman ruins, Turkish baths, imperial palaces, and socialist-realist architecture, Budapest is regarded by some as "the Paris of the east," and is one of the true hidden treasures of Central Europe. Also, as a nation situated between “east” and “west”, Hungary provides a perfect case study for an exploration of the way in which the interconnected forces of Europeanization and globalization have shaped national histories and identities.

Here are some of the distances from Budapest to other European cities of interest by train:

  • 3 hours to Vienna
  • 4 hours to Zagreb
  • 6 hours to Prague
  • 6 hours to Cracow
  • 7 hours to Munich
  • 8 hours to Venice
  • 10 hours to Berlin
  • 10 hours to Warsaw
  • 12 hours to Rome
  • 15 hours to Paris

REQUIRED COURSES

HUM 350T – Eastern European Life and Culture [GE C.3.A & Z]
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the introduction of Eastern Europe and other contemporary European cultures and civilizations. Students will be introduced to social, historical & cultural highlights of contemporary Europe, to principles and methods useful for analyzing cultures and their own interactions with them. This course includes guest faculty lectures and related field trips.

HIST 411B - Genocide and Political Extremism in East Central Europe*
Using Hungary as a backdrop, this course explores the interconnected histories of genocide and political extremism in east central Europe in the twentieth century. The first part of the course explores the rise of nationalist hatred and genocidal violence in the region from the First and Second Balkan Wars to World War II, culminating in a close study of the Holocaust and the widespread practices of retribution and expulsion which followed in its wake.  The second part of the course focuses on the communist period, and on the violent (and sometimes genocidal) practices associated with the building of socialist states.  The course concludes with a careful examination of the post-communist period, looking not only at the return of genocide and ethnic cleansing to the Balkans and parts of the former Soviet Union in the 1990s, but also at the recent resurgence of the radical right, and the consequences that this has had for minorities throughout the region.
