Welcome to Intersession 2012 in Paris, France

Why Study in Paris?

Notre Dame de paris

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young person, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”  --Ernest Hemingway

This winter, join us for Writing through Paris  and see the “City of Lights” as have the hundreds of writers who, like Hemingway, have been inspired by its moveable feast. Arrive in Paris in time to spend New Year's Eve on the Champs Elysees.  Like the writers we will read, you can visit the Luxembourg Gardens, the Louvre, and Musee d'Orsay; climb the steps of Notre Dame, Mosque d'Arabe, and Sacre Coeur; wander through the Latin Quarter and the Marais, explore the bookstalls along the  the Seine, and relax at any one of the hundreds of cafes that line the boulevards of Paris.  Find your inspiration from the allure of this charming and complicated city.

REQUIRED COURSE

ENGL 306  Writing through Paris (3) [GE C.3]

"If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young person, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”  --Ernest Hemingway

Writing through Paris invites students to see Paris as have the hundreds of writers who, like Hemingway, have been inspired by its moveable feast. You will study the art of travel writing, and read and write (in English) about traveling and living in this beautiful and complex city.  With our class, you will visit the museums, parks, cafes, neighborhoods, and bookstores that appear in the essays we read, and then you will take a turn at writing about what you see and hear and experience in these same places.  As a final project, you will select a part of Paris that you find most interesting, mysterious, amusing, or confusing and write an extended essay that discloses something about you, about the place you have chosen, and about the power of travel to change our worldview.*
