Brief
biography: Lynn Sargeant grew up in Jamestown, North Dakota before heading to the University of Minnesota (B.S., Music Education, 1989), the University of Washington (B.A., International Studies, 1994) and Indiana University (M.A. 1996, PhD 2001) for training. Before arriving at Cal State Fullerton in 2004, she taught at Colorado College (2001-2003) and was a postdoctoral fellow of the National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation (2003-2004). In addition to teaching the two core courses on Russian History, Russia to 1801 and Modern Russia and the Soviet Union, she is developing new courses on the region, including a research seminar on Catherine the Great and a course on Men, Women, and the Family in Russia and the Soviet Union. Dr. Sargeant’s research focuses on the cultural history of Late Imperial and early Soviet Russia. She has published articles in Music and Letters and the Russian Review. Her work has also appeared in Musical Education in Europe (1770-1914): Compositional, Institutional, and Political Challenges, edited by Michael Fend and Michel Noiray (Berlin: BMV, 2005). In the future, she plans research into the history of Russian popular and adult education. In addition, Dr. Sargeant has a strong interest in world history, especially the history of refugees and migrants in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
