Brief
biography: I am a New Zealander by birth, and earned my bachelors and masters degrees at the University of Auckland. After that I taught history for four years in Hong Kong, before moving to Sydney, Australia, where I earned my Ph.D. at Macquarie University. My doctoral thesis was entitled "Peace and Peril, Sima Qian's Portrayal of Han - Xiongnu Relations". It was awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Medal for excellence in research. I moved from Australia to California to take up my position in the History Department at CSUF in 2006. I was recently offered a pretigious four year post-doctoral fellowship by the Australian Research Council, but I decided to remain at CSUF in my current position, and not to return to Australia to take up the fellowship
