CSUF Gerontology Program Received a Research Grant from the Philanthropist Dr. Arnold Mille
CSU Fullerton Gerontology Academic Program is pleased to announce receiving a new grant from Dr. Arnold Miller, a long-time champion for gerontology education. The grant has a specific purpose and that is to promote assistive technology for aging in place, in the honor of Beverly Miller, Dr. Miller’s late wife, beloved long-time supporter of CSUF Gerontology Academic Program and generous donor of Miller Scholarship in Gerontology with her husband.
This grant, in the name of Beverly Miller University Assistive Technology User Research project, is at the center of the new CATLab Initiative of the University. The Miller grant provides funding to start a user research project that aims to identify older adults’ and their caregivers’ perception, acceptance, usage patterns, and unmet needs in using assistive devices to enhance older persons’ daily function. Miller grant stipulates that this research has to be conducted by an interdisciplinary team of CSUF faculty, lead by a gerontologist. Gerontology faculty member Dr. Echo Chang is coordinating this research project. This pilot project, centered on research, has satellite activities to initiate partnerships with device providers, and to facilitate students service-learning through an assistive device education center for the community, and eventually to catalyze the establishment of CATLab ---California Assistive Technology Laboratory for new product incubating and prototype testing---on CSUF campus.
The Miller grant is set up as a challenge grant; the University will match donation received. Please spread the words and encourage support for the challenge grant. Anyone interested in joining to help move the project forward with research and outreach is welcome to contact Dr. Echo Chang at echang@fullerton.edu.
