The Cal State Fullerton Center for the Study of Economics of Aging (CSEA) was established on May 14, 2002. Affiliated with the College of Business and Economics, the purpose of the center is to serve as a focal point for faculty, administrators, alumni, students, and friends of the university to cooperate and promote the study of the economics of aging in all of its aspects – work, retirement, health, housing.

The CSEA aims to foster cross-disciplinary links with the Institute of Gerontology at Cal State Fullerton.

The objectives of the CSEA are:

• to advocate and promote research on economic issues related to aging with an emphasis on grant and contract research
• to foster collaboration with other organizations, profit and non-profit, to study the economics of aging
• to foster cooperation among the various centers at Cal State Fullerton particularly the Institute of Gerontology, the Continuing Learning Experience group, the Social Science Research Center, the Center for Demographic Studies, and the Center for Successful Aging in the study of the economics of aging
• to cooperate with Gerontology Academic Programs in the development of courses and educational programs on the economics of aging
• to advocate public discussions on economic policies and programs related to aging

The CSEA is self supporting, and start-up donations are needed to provide initial operating funds. Eventually, operations will be funded from contract and grant research and from endowments. Other funding objectives include:

• to establish a named professorship position in Aging and Human Capital in the Department of Economics ($25,000 per year in the short-run, or a $500,000 endowment needed to pay for assigned time)
• to designate office space within the new CBE building or in the expansion of the Ruby Gerontology Center (gifts of $400,000 will be needed over time)
• to establish a named chair of the Study of Economics of Aging in the CBE (a $1 million endowment will be needed over time as a salary augmentation and for a research assistant)
