Environmental Sites: Water

  • Aqua
NASA Earth Science satellite mission named for the large amount of information that the mission will be collecting about the Earth's water cycle, including evaporation from the oceans, water vapor in the atmosphere, clouds, precipitation, soil moisture, sea ice, land ice, and snow cover on the land and ice. Additional variables also being measured by Aqua include radioactive energy fluxes, aerosols, vegetation cover on the land, phytoplankton and dissolved organic matter in the oceans, and air, land, and water temperatures. - site intro
  • Bioassessment and Biocriteria Program
EPA, Office of Water. Bioassessment and biocriteria basics, technical assistance and guidance documents, bioassessment and biocriteria in state and tribal programs, and uses of bioassessment data and biocriteria. Glossary, training resources, and case studies are also included.
  • Biological Criteria: National Program Guidance for Surface Waters
Biological criteria identify water quality impairments, support regulatory controls that address water quality problems, and assess improvements in water quality from regulatory efforts. Biological criteria are numerical values or narrative expressions that describe the reference biological integrity of aquatic communities inhabiting waters of a given designated aquatic life use. They are developed through the direct measurement of aquatic community components inhabiting unimpaired surface waters. - site intro. Site covers legal authority, the conceptual framework, integrating biological criteria in surface water management, reference condition, biological survey, and hypothesis testing.
  • Biological Indicators of Watershed Health
Biological indicators integrate, in themselves, the effects of various stressors, aquatic organisms and their communities reflect current conditions, as well as changes over time and cumulative effects. Biological indicators can show problems otherwise missed or underestimated. - site index. Site refers to key concepts: biological integrity, multimetric indexes, ecoregions and watersheds, fish and benthic macroinvertebrates, and recommended bioassessment program requirements.
