Environmental Sites: Pollution

  • Brownfields Home Page
Contains descriptive information about this EPA initiative, overviews of national and regional pilot projects and a list of brownfields contacts.
  • Cesspools of Shame: How Factory Farm Lagoons and Sprayfields Threaten Environmental and Public Health
This July 2001 report from NRDC and the Clean Water Network documents how animal waste from factory farms threatens human health and our nation's rivers. Most factory farms store animal waste in open lagoons as large as several football fields. Lagoons routinely burst, sending millions of gallons of manure into waterways and spreading microbes that can cause gastroenteritis, fevers, kidney failure, and death. This report lists the track records of the largest polluters and recommends existing technology that is safer and more sustainable. - site intro
  • Congressional Research Service
Research reports. Topics include: automobile and light truck fuel, electric utility restructuring, water quality, nationwide permits for wetlands projects, superfund reauthorization issues, endangered species, energy efficiency, environmental protection legislation of the 105th congress, renewable energy, Pfiesteria and Related Harmful Blooms.
  • Envirofacts Data Warehouse and Applications: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Search by zip code, city, county, state, EPA region, facility, and/or standard industrial code to retrieve data on facilities and their: permitted discharges to water; toxic releases reported; hazardous waste handling; active or archived Superfund report; risk management plans; air releases reported. "The Envirofacts Warehouse is a database that includes information on Superfund sites, drinking water, air pollution, toxic releases, hazardous waste, and water discharge permits. Through Envirofacts, you can get lists of which facilities in your neighborhood are releasing pollutants or are legally handling hazardous materials, where any Superfund sites are located and what their cleanup status is, and more. In many cases, you can link to more information about the chemicals involved at the listed sites, and find out whether they are potentially harmful." Envirofacts Warehouse also offers Maps on Demand and Enviromapper. Maps on Demand query forms generate maps which display environmental information from the Envirofacts databases. Note that map files are generated offline; files are e-mailed to the requestor. INFOMINE
  • EPA Sector Notebooks
From the EPA's Office of Compliance, contain information on selected major industrial groups. These notebooks "focus on key indicators that holistically present air, water, and land pollutant release data." Each sector-specific notebook, in a single source, "includes: a comprehensive environmental profile; industrial process information; pollution prevention techniques; pollutant release data; regulatory requirements; compliance/enforcement history; government and industry partnerships; innovative programs; contact names; bibliographic references; description of research methodology." - site intro
  • EPA Zip Code Search
The EPA Zip Code Search offers data on environmental monitoring and environmental conditions by zip code. Enter a ZIP code, then select the type of information you want to find. Zip code information is available on: pollution, hazardous waste sites, and other regulatory information (from Envirofacts); watershed conditions (from Surf Your Watershed); live computer-generated map of regulated sites in zip code (from Enviromapper); and ultraviolet (UV)index forecast (from SunWISE).
  • Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable
The Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable (FRTR) consists of senior executives of eight federal agencies that have an interest in site remediation technology. Included at the FRTR web site are: Publications with comprehensive information on innovative technologies and on technical solutions to common contamination problems. Some publications are available online; others are listed and may be ordered from NTIS; Case studies, cost and performance case study reports; Site Remediation Technology InfoBase lists and describes federal cleanup programs, federal site remediation technology development assistance programs, federal remediation technology electronic databases and resources, and federal publications on remediation technologies; Materials on Remedial process optimization and remedial system evaluation; Technology demonstration and development links; Remediation Technologies Screening Matrix and Reference Guide and Field Sampling and Analysis Technologies Matrix; and Information about FRTR meetings.
  • National Atmospheric Deposition Program/National Trends Network (NADP/NTN)
A network of monitoring stations for acid rain. Shows concentrations: sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chlorine, and nitrogen ions. Site specific, and some weekly, monthly and daily data.
  • National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan
The NCP (actually the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan) is described in 40 CFR 300. This describes the National Response System for responding to spills and other emergencies. The National Response Team is part of this, and they have a very informative website that describes how it all works. - Lucie E. Mayeux
  • National Response Center
Reporting center for oil and chemical spills. Statistics on oil and chemical spills and their costs.
  • ScoreCard
Pollution locator. Map generator. Environmental issues include: Criteria Air Pollutants, Hazardous Air Pollutants, Lead Hazards, Potential Sources of Land Contamination, Animal Waste from Factory Farms, Chemical Releases from Industrial Facilities, Clean Water Act Status, Watershed Indicators, and Setting Environmental Priorities. From Environmental Defense.
