Environmental Sites: Chemical
- BRENDA: The Comprehensive
Enzyme Information System
"BRENDA is a comprehensive database of enzymes maintained by the Institute
of Biochemistry at the University of Cologne. Scientists collect and
evaluate enzyme function data from primary literature sources. The site
has recently been updated with new enzymes and an entirely new search
engine. Various searches can be performed, including enzyme name, organism,
or EC number. Links to literature citations, two dimensional images,
and other databases are included for many of the enzymes. Academic and
nonprofit use is free; commercial users must acquire a license. [AL]"

Industry Archives: A Project of the Environmental Working Group
The Chemical Industry Archives consists of thousands of internal
documents from the chemical industry and from its national trade associations.
Most of these documents were obtained in connection with legal proceedings
against the chemical industry. It describes how these companies concealed
this information from the public -- and continued to sell products that
they knew were dangerous. This website also exposes the industry-funded
public relations and lobbying campaigns that were designed to obscure
the truth about the health risks of toxic chemicals. - site intro

the Internet and elsewhere - site intro.
- Environmental Fate
Data Base (EFDB)
Site is an aid in identifying persistent chemical classes, as well as
physical or chemical properties that may correlate to particular behavior
in the environment. The EFDB is comprised of several interrelated files,
DATALOG, CHEMFATE, BIOLOG, and BIODEG. These databases share a CAS#
file containing over 20,000 chemicals with preferred name and formula,
and a bibliographic file containing full references on over 35,000 articles
cited. DATALOG is a bibliographic file indexed by Chemical Abstract
Service (CAS) registry number that contains eighteen types of environmental
fate data. CHEMFATE is a data value file containing 25 categories of
environmental fate and physical/chemical property information on commercially
important chemical compounds. BIOLOG, or the Microbial Degradation/Toxicity
File, provides sources of microbial toxicity and biodegradation data.
BIODEG contains experimental values as in CHEMFATE, but only relating
to biodegradation subjects. - site intro
- Household
Products Database
This database links over 4,000 consumer brands to health effects from
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by the manufacturers and
allows scientists and consumers to research products based on chemical
ingredients - site intro.
- INCHEM
From the International Programme on Chemical Safety’s (IPCS) INCHEM
service, for those concerned with chemical safety and the sound management
of chemicals became free of charge to people around the world via the
Internet. IPCS INCHEM offers quick and easy access to thousands of searchable
full-text documents from international bodies on chemical risks and
the sound management of chemicals, helping countries fulfil their commitments
under the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED)
Agenda 21, Chapter 19. Produced through cooperation between IPCS (WHO/ILO/UNEP)
and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS),
IPCS INCHEM directly responds to one of the Intergovernmental Forum
on Chemical Safety (IFCS) priority actions to consolidate current, internationally
peer-reviewed chemical safety-related publications and database records
from international bodies, for public access.
The IPCS INCHEM collection includes:
· Environmental Health Criteria (EHC) monographs
· Concise International Chemical Assessment Document (CICADS)
· Health and Safety Guides (HSGs)
· International Chemical Safety Cards (ICSCs)
· IPCS/EC Evaluation of Antidotes Series
· JECFA (Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives) - monographs and
evaluations
· JMPR (Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues) – monographs and evaluations
· Pesticide Data Sheets (PDSs)
· Poisons Information Monographs (PIMs)
· Screening Information Data Set (SIDS) for High Production Volume Chemicals
· CIS Chemical Information (ILO/CIS)
· International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) - Summaries and
Evaluations
Other chemical safety information from international bodies will be
added progressively to the collection. - site intro

- Polution Prevention
Pollution Prevention (P2) is a strategy of material use, processing,
and management that reduces or eliminates the creation of pollutants
and waste at the source--prior to recycling, treatment or disposal.
P2 is also referred to as source reduction. Toxics Use Reduction (TUR)
is similar in concept to P2, but more highly focused on toxic chemicals.
P2 and TUR can be achieved through chemical substitution, process redesign,
product reformulation, improved operations and maintenance, and/or in-process
recycling. Facility planning is a systematic approach to P2 implementation
that consists of quantifying chemical use and waste generation, P2 options
identification and evaluation, goal setting, and progress assessment.
