| • Who
may apply to the Writing Center?
Any undergraduate who has attained junior standing and
any graduate student may apply. Applicants may come from
any major, so long as minimum qualifications have been
met.
• What are the qualifications required for
the job?
No previous experience is required to become a Writing
Center tutor. However, all undergraduate tutors must
have passed the following classes with a B or better:
Beginning College Writing (English 101); Upper Division
Writing Requirement (e.g. English 301); and Structure
of Modern English (English 303). Tutors must also enroll
in English 402 (Theories of Responding to Written Composition)
concurrent with their first semester of tutoring.
• What application materials should I submit?
Applicants must submit the following to the English Department
office by 1 p.m. on the last Friday of April: a completed
application form, two letters of recommendation, and
a recently submitted and graded academic essay.
• What will be my hours and compensation?
Undergraduate students have a great amount of flexibility
in their scheduling. The starting rate of pay is $8.11
per hour, and they may be scheduled between 5 and 20
hours per week, depending on need and budgetary restraints.
Graduate students are hired on a contractual basis, and
are paid a monthly stipend that approximates $11.07 per
hour. Contract may be arranged in 5, 10, 15, and 20-hour
increments.
Another option for both graduate and undergraduate students
is to be paid in course credit. Tutors receive one unit
of credit for each three hours worked per week. Students
who wish to receive credit must enroll in English 496 (Student-to-Student
Tutorial).
