Study Abroad in Ireland
This summer 2012, Dr. Erin Hollis will teach HUM 350T – Irish Life and Culture and ENGL 462 - Modern Irish Literature as part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Study Abroad Program. As a student enrolled in the course, you will walk the streets of literary Dublin as you drink in its rich heritage and culture on this summer study abroad program. You will follow in the footsteps of two of James Joyce's most well-known characters—Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom. You will stop for a Bloomian glass of burgundy and gorgonzola sandwich at Davy Byrne's, a pub immortalized in Ulysses that remains open today. You will also journey further north and discover the Dublin Writer's Museum—a celebration of the celebrated writers of Ireland, including four Nobel Prize winners for literature (W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, and Seamus Heaney). You will stop to see a play at the Abbey Theatre—The National Theatre of Ireland that first opened its doors in 1904 and helped to foster the Irish Literary Revival. On the way back to Trinity College, home of the Book of Kells, stop in a local pub and get caught up in some craic, or enjoyable conversation, with some of the locals.
