Welcome to Dr. Gass' Page

Today,  you  are going to begin to learn to use the Netscape Composer.  You will begin to make your own web page.  Since I'm just learning to use the Netscape Composer (even though I've used a number of other composers), I'll be learning along with you.  We will be working on the following skills:

I.  Opening the Netscape Composer

II. Formatting the page (background color, etc.)

III. Beginning with an Image

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (from the Globe Restoration Web Site, London).

When you are ready to begin your page, do the following:

    1.  Click on the Image icon.

    2.  In the open window, click on "Choose File".

    3.  Find your data file in Drive A.

    4.  Open your graphics file and choose an image that you have saved.

    5.  Double click on the image.

    6.  When the file name appears in the "Image Properties" window, click on "ok" .

    7.  Your image should appear on your new web page.

    8.  If you wish to center or align your image, go to "Format" then to "Align" then choose "right" "center" or "left".

Warning:  Never, never, never use images that have been copyrighted!!  When you are 'borrowing' images from the net, make certain that they do not have a copyright on them.  You do not have the right to use copyrighted images without the owner's permission.  Sometimes you can get that permission, but make sure that you give the name of the owner when you use such images.

IV.  Titling Your Page

       1.  Underneath or beside or above your image, give your page a title

        2. Your title should include your name and 'web page'--this page will be the hub of all of your other, subsidiary pages.

V.  Using Tables

        1.  Make a table to highlight the other pages that you will be creating.  (See table above.  You'll notice I have four columns.)

        2.  Click on the Table icon.

        3.  Choose 'number of rows' and type in 2.

        4.  Choose 'columns' and type in 3.  (You can have as many rows and columns as you want; for our purposes choose two rows and three columns.)

        5.  Under 'table alignment' choose center and click.

        6.  You may experiment later with the other choices in the window.  (For cell padding and spacing, I chose 5, 8, and 8. When you have made your choice, click on OK.

Your table should look something like this.  (You'll notice that I chose to include a caption box as well.)

        8.  Now fill in the sections with the names of your soon-to-be-created other pages.  You can center your text if you want; you can change the font size; you can change the font color.  Do what pleases you.

VI. Adding Dividers and Other Decorative Borders

        1.  To separate sections of your page, click on the H.Line icon. A hard line will appear wherever your cursor is. If you want more than one line, click more than one time.

        2.  If you want decorations on your page, you will need to find clip art either in the program, on the net, or for purchase in computer supply stores like Fry's.  There are literally thousands of possibilities.  You should experiment with images, borders, buttons, etc.

VII. Opening Other Pages

        1.  Beginning a new page is easy.  Simple click on the New icon.  A blank page will appear.

        2.  Follow the same steps as you did with your home page, except that you will want to title your new pages in accordance with the different topics that you will be developing in this course.

        3.  For the time being, title your new pages to match the file names that you created at the beginning of the course.

VIII. Creating Links to Your Pages

    A.  Creating the first link.

        1.  To create a link to another page, first type at the bottom of your page, in italics, "Return to ______'s Home Page"

        2.  Next, highlight what you have just typed.

        3.  Click on the Link icon.  A "Character Properties" window will open.  Click on "Choose File."

        4.  Find your  home page file and double click.  Or click on "Open."

        5.  When the "Character Properties" window returns, the address of your home page should appear in the box.

        6.  Click on OK.  You will be returned to your page.  Click the arrow somewhere away from the highlighted text to remove the highlighting.  Your "Return to" line should now be in another color (blue probably).

    B.  Creating the return link.

        1.  Close the page you've been working on.

        2.  Open your home page.

        3.  Go to the table which lists your other pages and highlight the one you've just created the link for.  (In my case, it's "gassnetscapepage.html".)

        4.  Click on the Link icon; then follow the same steps as you did before, remembering to select the file for the page you are linking to.

IX.  Creating Links to Other Web Sites

        1.  Now you are ready to use that file of web addresses you've been collecting.

        2.  Create a nice "Links to Other Web Sites" page (title it to suit yourself).

        3.  On your Links page, you can either create a table with generic subject titles (like Shakespeare,  Theory, etc.); if you do, you will then have to create secondary pages to correspond to the Links page; or, you can simply organize your websites by topic and list them on the Links page.

        4.  Once you've done that, click on the Link icon and follow the steps prescribed to link to other sources.

X.  Previewing Your Page in the Netscape Preview

All you have to do to admire your work is to click on the Preview icon and wait. Your page should appear before you as it would look published on the net.

Congatulations!!!
