Dr. Stephen J. Mexal

Teaching interests: Nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature; the literary history of the American West; literary realism and naturalism; Chicana/o and African-American literature

Research interests: Public culture and the popular press; classical and contemporary American liberalisms; critical theories of wilderness; the public sphere in the American Far West; race and critical race theory; urban space; masculinity studies; hip-hop culture

Brief biography: I earned my Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 2007.  My work has been published in MELUS, English Language Notes, Studies in the Novel, and the critical anthology Eco-Man: New Perspectives on Masculinity and Nature.  I am currently at work on a book-length project on liberalism and the discourse of wilderness in the nineteenth-century Western public sphere.
