Dear English majors and English graduate students,
Each year the English Department offers graduate and undergraduate students a professional opportunity to work as Writing Center tutors. In the spring semester we accept applications from qualified students to work as writing tutors during the coming academic year.
Working as a tutor in the Writing Center is excellent preparation if you are considering a career in the teaching of English. As a tutor, you will encounter a wide variety of skill levels, and you will learn to tailor your instruction to meet individual learning styles. In addition to one-on-one tutoring, you may also have the opportunity to assist in an English 099 classroom. Two semesters of tutoring in the Writing Center or the equivalent is a prerequisite for participation in the English Department's Teaching Associate program.
All new tutors are required to enroll in English 402 during their first semester of work. This is a three-unit course that introduces the learning theory supporting one-on-one instruction, current tutoring methods, and theories of the writing process.
To learn more about the tutoring program, visit the department and Writing Center websites: http://hss.fullerton.edu/english/ and http://hss.fullerton.edu/english/wc/ If you wish to apply, please complete the attached application form and return it along with two letters of recommendation that speak to your qualifications for the program to the English Department, UH 323, Attention: Writing Center. The application is due on the last Friday in April. Prospective tutors will be interviewed at the end of spring semester.
We welcome you to visit the Writing Center on the first floor of Pollak Library North. If you have any questions you may send me an email me at swestbrook@fullerton.edu, or stop by my office, UH-446. Sincerely,
Dr. Steve Westbrook
Writing Center Coordinator
