HENRY JAMES'S
THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY

The Love Letter by Pedro Lira

The aim of this site is to contribute to the understanding of The Portrait of a Lady, one of Henry James's most celebrated early novels.  It provides updated bibliographical references as well as links to other sites providing further information on James's works.

The essay included in this site compares the narrative characterization of Isabel Archer with a cubist pictorial mode. I hope this analogy helps readers appreciate the nuances of James's fascinatingly complex heroine.
