English Internship(English 498)

The English Internship is a program that provides you with opportunities to apply your skills in an employment situation, to gain on-the-job experience, to work with professionals in academic and non-academic environments where literature, language, and writing skills are in active use, and to try out tentative occupational choices.

If you are planning a teaching career, the internship can be used to satisfy the introduction to teaching prerequisite for admission to the credential program. If you are contemplating a non-teaching career, it can sharpen your resume and interview skills, and provide you with experience that can give you an edge in seeking professional employment. In some instances, internships have led to full-time careers after graduation.

Completion of the internship course provides English majors with three units of credit towards graduation. (Note: these units are CR/NC and so will not count as elective units for your English major.) Positions generally require 10 hours per week of activity, or 120 hours for a three-unit course. You may also register for a one- or two-unit internship and work 40 or 80 hours for the units. In most instances, the hours are flexible and can be designed around your class schedule. While most positions are unpaid, some are salaried.

Recent and current internships include 1) various kinds of applied research, writing and editing positions in government agencies, museums, libraries, colleges, legal clinics, and non-profit organizations; 2) writing-oriented positions in private industry: advertising and public-relations firms, special interest magazines, technical writing; 3) tutoring, teacher-aide positions, and the teaching of English as a second language. Students may also generate their own positions.

The Center for Internships and Service-Learning (CISL) website at http://campusapps.fullerton.edu/cisl/
can direct you to the database where you can find hundreds of internships listed. You may also access the database by going to the Center, Langsdorf Hall, room 209.
