Issac Cardenas

Teaching interests: My primary teaching interests are CHIC 331 The Chicano Child and CHIC 305 The Chicano Family. I have also enjoyed teaching CHIC 102 Communication Skills, CHIC 106 Introduction to Chicano Studies, CHIC 332 The Chicano Adolescent, CHIC 450 The Chicano and Contemporary Issues, and Issues on Bilingual and Bicultural Education.

Research interests: Equality of educational opportunity with emphasis on Chicana/o access to higher education; examining factors that promote as well as impede academic success for culturally diversed students; migrant and bilingual/bicultural education.

Brief biography: I am professor emeritus and proud to have served as chair of our department for 28 years.  I earned a Doctor of Education degree at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in Educational Leadership and Administration (1974), a Master of Arts degree at Texas A & I University, Kingsville, Texas in Elementary Education (1969), a Bachelor of Arts degree at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas in History and Political Science (1965), and an Associate of Arts degree at San Antonio College, San Antonio, Texas (1964).  Over the years, I have received many memorable awards and honors including the CSUF Outstanding Advisor Award, Outstanding Mentor Award, and Outstanding University Service Award.  I am also proud of many professional and community honors including the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Outstanding Contribution Award, the California Rural Legal Assistance Educator Award, the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association Educator of the Year Award, and the League of United Latin American Citizens Outstanding Hispanic Educator Award.  For more information about my personal background, please see feature article, "From Fields to Faculty" on the CSUF Titan Magazine at Titanmag.com, click on Features and year 2004, "Bright Harvest".
