CASA would like to congratulate John Kelleher of Loyola University, whose paper, "L.A. Gets Physical: Nanette Francini, Jane Fonda and the Rise of California Fitness Culture," won the 2011 prize for best graduate student paper presented at CASA. This prize includes the opportunity for the graduate student to present his or her paper at ASA's national meeting in the fall on a panel of regional ASA conference-prize winners.

We would also like to acknowledge the runners-up in the 2011 competition: Monica Jovanovich-Kelley, University of California, San Diego, for her paper "The Recontextualization of Public Art in Los Angeles during the 1930s"; and Laura Ferguson, University of Michigan, for "The Makings and Meanings of San Francisco's Nineteenth-Century Vice District."

  Membership in CASA
All American Studies Association (ASA) members residing in California are automatically members of CASA and are not assessed any additional dues beyond their standard ASA membership fee. ASA members in other states may join CASA by paying additional dues when they join or renew their membership in ASA. Click here for information about joining the ASA.

About CASA

The California American Studies Association (CASA) was created in 1982, when the northern and southern California ASA chapters were combined. Annual three-day conferences were held every spring from 1983 to 2003, addressing focused topics and drawing presenters and attendees not only from California but also from other regions. After a five-year hiatus, a small group of veteran and new members revived the association and held a conference in 2008 at Soka University of America. In 2009 we met at UC Santa Barbara, in 2010 at CSU Long Beach, and in 2011 at CSU Fullerton.
